No.160 Sqn RAF Founded : 1st June 1918
Api soya paragasamu - We seek and strike A nucleus of No.160 Squadron was formed on 1 June 1918 but existed for only a few weeks before being disbanded on 4 July 1918. On 16 January 1942, the squadron reformed at Thurleigh as a Liberator heavy bomber unit for the Middle East. The ground personnel left on the 12 February but the aircrews remained in the UK for training and early in May moved to Nutts Corner for anti-submarine patrols over the Atlantic for a month. Early in June the squadron's Liberators began to fly out to Palestine where they began night bombing raids on enemy ports and bases in Crete and Libya. In the meantime the ground crews had arrived in India where they awaited the arrival of their aircraft but the situation in the Middle East resulted in these being retained until after the Battle of El Alamein in October 1942. Liberators began leaving for India one by one until those remaining where merged with 178 Squadron on 15 January 1943. On 6 February 1943, the first patrols began to be flown over the Bay of Bengal and after a few weeks the bulk of the Squadron moved to Ceylon. While mainly engaged in shipping protection, No.160 also used its long-range aircraft for photographic reconnaissance missions over Sumatra and the Nicobars and for minelaying. In June 1945, the squadron was transferred to speacial duties and began dropping agents and supplies to resistance groups in Malaya and Sumatra, some of the sorties lasting more than twenty-four hours. With the Japenese surrender, No.160 began transport duties between India, Ceylon and Malaya until June 1946 when its aircraft began to fly back to the UK. At Leuchars it was reduced to six aircraft for general reconnaissance and air-sea rescue duties, the first of its replacement Lancasters arriving at the end of August. On 30 September 1946, the squadron was renumbered 120 Squadron. •The squadron only flew Liberator aircraft; Mk's II, III, V, VI, and VIII during WWII |
