PEG1226. The Panzer - The Story of Adolf Hitlers Infamous Panzer Divisions.
Battle tanks decided many battles during the Second World War. Some 25,000 were produced in Germany and some 250,000 by the Allies during the conflict. Yet despite overwhelming odds, the German Panzer Divisions became legendary. Just as a cavalryman becomes attached to his horse, the Panzer crews still vividly remember their mechanical mounts, the sounds they produced, the smell of fuel and oil, the effects they had on the enemy and also the fact that the Panzer could become a steel coffin in one blazing moment.
Video.
55 minutes.
PEG1161. The Story of the Hurricane.
Its eight wing-mounted Colt-Brownings spitting flame, the Hawker Hurricane swooped to dispatch over two thirds of all enemy aircraft destroyed in the Battle of Britain. Courageous squadron commander Douglas Bader, 14 - kill her Cobber Kain, Ginger Lacey - the top Battle of Britain ace with 18 victims - and many other RAF pilots owed their reputations and their lives to this toughest mount of all. The Hurricane was outnumbered but never outclassed, designed to hit the enemy hard, absorb tremendous punishment yet live to fight another day. Featuring colour footage of the last surviving aircraft, alongside original combat film, this is the definitive documentary of a fighter plane that truly changed the course of history.
Video.
55 minutes.
PEG1160. The Story of the Spitfire.
With the courage and skill of fighter aces like Johnnie Johnson, Sailor Malan and Bobby Tuck, the Supermarine Spitfire helped change the course of the war in favour of the Allies. The only match for the Luftwaffes Messerschmitt Bf109, the Spitfire played a major role in the success of the Battle of Britain. The classic combination of airframe, Rolls Royce Merlin engine and dual cannon/ machine gun armament struck terror into the hearts of the enemys most fearless flyers and won the aircraft a place in history as a timeless thoroughbred fighter. The Spitfire fought in the front line throughout the war, and rightly remains an aviation legend today. Combining dramatic wartime film with colour footage of surviving Spitfires in flight, this is the definitive documentary of a thoroughbred fighter.
Video.
55 minutes.
PEG1167. The History of the Luftwaffe, A Phoenix Rising.
From the ashes of the fires lit in the dog fights of the skies above the carnage of World War One, a phoenix would rise - the Luftwaffe of the Third Reich. No ordinary force, the Luftwaffe was to become the handmaiden of Hitlers dream of conquest and a vital component of Blitzkrieg or Lightning War. However the glories won in Poland, Scandinavia, Holland, Belgium and finally France, as the Nazis marched, victorious, through Europe, were to turn sour. The Fuhrers continual demands upon his airforce, as he fanatically pursued his Grand Design forced the Luftwaffe into the role of workhorse, though incompetence, intrigue and greed amongst its commanders made the task near impossible. Starved of new planes and pilots to fly them, stretched across two fronts in Europe and playing a vital role in North Africa, Goerings elite corps was fatally flawed. This tragic story chronicles the initial brilliant success of the Luftwaffe in Europe, its structure and tactics and the inherent weaknesses that were to drag the phoenix once again to its inescapable consummation within the fires of Berlin. The story is told using very rare footage only recently obtained from the eastern block and not seen in the west since the war.
Video.
60 minutes.
